Oilers at Golden Knights, Western Conference 2nd Round Game 1 preview

0

LAS VEGAS — Hostilities will be renewed between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of the Western Conference Second Round at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday (9:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN, TVAS, CBC).

It’s a rematch of the hotly contested series from two seasons ago; the teams met in this round in 2023 and the games were fast, skilled, physical and emotionally charged. The Golden Knights won the best-of-7 series in six games, using it as a springboard to their first Stanley Cup championship, secured against the Florida Panthers a month later.

Expect more of the same this time around with each team a legitimate contender to win the Stanley Cup. Vegas won the Pacific Division and Edmonton boasts arguably the two best forwards in the game in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Oilers were one win — one goal — away from winning the Cup last season, losing to the Panthers in a seven-game Final.

“Definitely some heat from a couple of years ago, some hard feelings,” said Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill, who replaced the injured Laurent Brossoit in the Game 3 win two seasons ago and finished the series, winning each of his two starts. “It’ll be good, high intensity. Guessing it will be pretty physical out there, maybe a little chippy. There’s going to be a lot of good hockey players on the ice.”

Plus, Game 1 is going to be vital. Vegas enters having won the final three games of its first-round series against the Minnesota Wild to eliminate them in six. Edmonton has won four straight since falling into an 0-2 hole in the first round against the Los Angeles Kings.

Teams that win Game 1 in a best-of-7 series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs are 531-249 (68.1 percent). That number improves to 75.1 percent if the home team is victorious.

“Last series was a little different just with the transition from the regular season to the playoffs,” Oilers forward Evander Kane said. “No excuse, but it was a bit of a fact. We understand that getting down 2-0 isn’t a recipe for success, especially against a team like Vegas. It’s important for us to go down there and get one and be ready for Game 1.”

Here is a breakdown of Game 1:

Oilers: Edmonton is healthy and has settled into a forward rotation with which it is comfortable. The Oilers have been playing McDavid and Draisaitl together with Corey Perry on the top line. McDavid and Draisaitl each returned from late-season injuries and have hit their stride. McDavid had 11 points (two goals, nine assists) and Draisaitl had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) against the Kings. Edmonton deployed the same lines the past two games.

“Feels like an eternity with what has gone in in the last month of the season,” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said.

Golden Knights: Top-line forward Pavel Dorofeyev remains out after he was injured during the third period of Game 5 against the Wild. He is listed as day to day. Don’t be surprised if Vegas switches its defense pairs; coach Bruce Cassidy is not shy about moving his tandems around to get the best matchup possible in-game. With several big, rangy defensemen at his disposal, there is the option for some interchangeability.

Bhad Bhabie on ‘How Deep’ Alleged LeVaughn and Alabama Ba…

0

Bhad Bhabie has shared more details about her relationship with on-and-off boyfriend Le Vaughn.

Speaking in an episode of Camilla Araujo’s podcast, which was posted Friday (May 23), the Florida rapper (real name Danielle Bregoli), who shares a 13-month-old daughter with Le Vaughn, detailed how she came to learn that her partner was allegedly cheating with Alabama Barker.

“I had already knew about him and Alabama. I had just learned how deep it was over the phone while I’m in Florida and he’s in L.A. at her house, in her bed,” Bhabie said around the 33-minute mark. “I’m finding out about this. He’s not answering the phone.”

The “OG Crashout” artist accused Le Vaughn of trying to “hurt” her at the time because she tried to break up with him. “And he told me he was gonna take [our daughter] Kali, and I was going through a drug problem at the time and I felt like he did have that over me and he could use that against me,” she explained.

Bhad Bhabie added that she posted a video about Le Vaughn allegedly abusing her as damage control. “My point was to even it out to keep my daughter, not for the world to attack [him],” she said.

The rapper added that while she’s protective over their disagreements now, there’s times where she’ll “smack” LeVaughn. “But I don’t hurt him,” Bhabie claimed.

Bhabie’s allegations about LeVaughn began last July when she said he was “going to get the help he needs,” and posted a video of him striking her along with a picture of a black eye. The couple would reconcile a month later with tattooed portraits of each other’s faces.

Bhabie and Barker have been feuding for months via diss tracks and shady comments on social media. Bhabie has even threatened to get physical with the “Cry Bhabie” artist.

Penn State picks up commitment from transfer portal linebacker target Amare Campbell

0

Penn State is adding its second spring transfer portal commitment and first on defense. Former North Carolina linebacker Amare Campbell committed to the Nittany Lions on Tuesday, his agency A&P Sports announced. ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news.

The Manassas, Va., native was in State College this week for an official visit. He previously visited SMU, and the Mustangs were another top option. However, similar to the College Football Playoff opening round, head coach James Franklin’s side beat out the AAC school in the end.

Campbell, who stands 6-foot, 230 pounds, initially entered the transfer portal during the winter window. However, he returned to the team for spring practice. But, once those drills ended, he returned to the portal and set out in earnest to find a new college football home. The defender will have two seasons of eligibility left to use at Penn State. After playing some as a true freshman in 2023, he made 76 tackles in 2024, which was the second most for the Tar Heels last fall. He was also second with 10.5 tackles for loss. Campbell also racked up 6.5 sacks, which was the second most on the team. And, he had five quarterback hurries, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble.

The On3 Industry Rankings call Campbell the top available player in the transfer portal as of early May, and thus, he is the No. 1 available linebacker, as well.

Campbell fills Penn State void at linebacker

Penn State exited spring practice with just eight scholarship linebackers after Ta’Mere Robinson left during drills and ended up at USC. Following the Blue-White game, Franklin made clear that his program was going to try and add a player at that position via the portal.

“We’re not a big portal team, but we’re going to have to address some issues,” Franklin said. “So if there is a linebacker out there that wants to come and be a part of our program and play for LBU, the most historic linebacker program in the history of college football, there’s an opportunity here to join the room and compete. So we will look at that.

“I think we got enough in the room, but to get through an entire season if we get some injuries, it could get challenging. So we’re going to look at the portal and see if we could find a solution. As you guys know, more times than not, we’d like it to be somebody that is connected to us and that we know. Because, we got a really good locker room, and I’ll make sure that we’re bringing the right people in our locker room. We’re very protective of that.”

FAA gives environmental approval for increased Starship launch rate

0

WASHINGTON — The Federal Aviation Administration will allow SpaceX to perform as many as 25 Starship launches a year from its Texas site, five times the previous limit.

The FAA issued a record of decision May 6 on an environmental assessment regarding an increase in launches from SpaceX’s Starbase facility at Boca Chica, Texas. The assessment evaluated a request by SpaceX to conduct up to 25 Starship/Super Heavy launches annually from Starbase, along with up to 25 landings each of the Super Heavy booster and Starship upper stage.

That assessment resulted in what is formally known as a mitigated finding of no significant impact (FONSI), which means the proposed increase in launches would not result in significant environmental effects requiring a more thorough environment impact statement.

“The FAA has determined that the Proposed Action is a reasonable, feasible, practicable, and prudent alternative for a federal decision in light of the established goals and objectives,” the FAA stated in the record of decision.

The approval comes with it an extensive list of conditions, some continued from prior environmental approvals and others new requirements. They notably include conditions regarding wastewater discharges from its launch deluge system, after allegations that the company had used the system without required permits.

The FAA’s decision came after a public comment period that included two in-person public meetings in Brownsville, Texas, and one virtual public meeting in January. The FAA stated it received 12,303 comments on the draft of the environmental assessment.

At the virtual public meeting, held Jan. 13, a majority of participants said they opposed the plan. Many expressed opposition to the proposals in the environmental assessment for potential Starship landings in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, something SpaceX has not attempted to date and would be unlikely to do frequently as it plans ultimately to land Starship back at Starbase.

One change in the final environmental assessment is that any Starship landings in the Pacific would be outside of the 200-nautical-mile (370-kilometer) exclusive economic zone surrounding Hawaii, with an additional buffer zone around a marine national monument in the region. The FAA stated it made the change based on public comments.

Even those who said at the virtual public meeting they support Starship launches expressed some reservations. “We’re excited by what SpaceX does,” said David Dixon, who said he owns properties on South Padre Island, north of Starbase, but worried about the effect vibrations from the launches had on buildings. “I know it’s doing long-term damage.”

The Starbase assessment is one of several environmental reviews regarding new or increased SpaceX launch activities at several locations. In March, the FAA approved a request from SpaceX to increase the number of Falcon 9 launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base’s Space Launch Complex (SLC) 4 from 36 per year to 50. The Department of the Air Force has started another environmental review to allow SpaceX to perform up to 100 Falcon launches a year from both SLC-4 and SLC-6, which SpaceX is converting to support Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches.

At Cape Canaveral, the FAA is conducting an environmental assessment for additional Falcon 9 launches from SLC-40, which includes a virtual public meeting May 8. The FAA is performing a separate environmental review for Starship launches from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A, while the Department of the Air Force is doing its own review of potential Starship launches from Cape Canaveral’s SLC-37, previously used by the Delta 4, or a proposed new SLC-50.

SpaceX gets FAA approval for 25 Starship launches per year

0

SpaceX just got permission to ramp up launches of its Starship megarocket from South Texas.

On Tuesday (May 6), the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released its final environmental assessment (EA) of Starship operations at Starbase, the SpaceX facility near Brownsville that just became Texas’ newest city.

The report grants SpaceX’s request to boost the number of Starship launches from Starbase per year by a factor of five, to 25. It also allows up to 25 landings at the site annually by each of Starship’s two stages, the giant booster called Super Heavy and the upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship, or simply Ship.

“After reviewing and analyzing this Final Tiered EA, including all available data and information on existing conditions and potential impacts, the FAA has determined that modifying SpaceX’s vehicle operator license supporting the increased launch and landing cadence of the Starship/Super Heavy launch vehicle would not significantly impact the quality of the human environment within the meaning of NEPA,” the FAA wrote in a newly released 53-page document called a Mitigated Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and Record of Decision (ROD). (NEPA is the National Environmental Policy Act.)

“Therefore, the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement is not required, and the FAA is independently issuing this Mitigated FONSI and ROD,” it adds.

This finding was hardly a surprise; a draft EA issued by the FAA last November allowed the 25-flight cadence as well.

Starship is the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built, and it’s designed to be fully and rapidly reusable. SpaceX and its founder, Elon Musk, believe the giant vehicle will make Mars settlement economically feasible in the not-too-distant future.

Starship has flown eight times to date and twice so far in 2025. Both of this year’s test flights, which occurred in January and March, had similar outcomes. Super Heavy performed well, coming back to Starbase for a dramatic catch by the launch tower’s “chopstick” arms. But the Ship upper stage had problems, breaking apart less than 10 minutes into flight and raining debris down on the Turks and Caicos Islands and The Bahamas, respectively.

SpaceX is currently gearing up for Starship’s ninth flight; it has conducted engine tests with the Super Heavy and Ship that will launch on the upcoming test mission. But we don’t know yet when that liftoff will occur.

Friedrich Merz Becomes Germany’s Leader After Unexpected Day of Drama

Before he returned to politics, won a national election and became the first would-be chancellor in modern German history to fail to win the job on the first ballot in Parliament, Friedrich Merz accepted an invitation to a gathering of the French Foreign Legion in Corsica.

At the last moment, the organizers asked him to arrive on the parade ground not by road or rail, but by parachute. Mr. Merz, then a corporate lawyer, had never jumped out of a plane. But a fellow attendee recalled recently that Mr. Merz did not hesitate. He made the jump — successfully, but with a bit of a rough landing.

It is not yet clear what the long-term implications are of Mr. Merz’s more recent rough landing — his bid to become Germany’s next chancellor.

After requiring two rounds of voting in Parliament, he will become Germany’s next leader. But he will do so at a pivotal time for the nation’s economy, security and role in Europe, and with fresh questions swirling around him.

The inability to secure enough votes Tuesday to become chancellor on the first vote comes as he needs to wrangle lawmakers to confront crises at home and abroad, while holding off a surge from the far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD.

Mr. Merz is a product of the Sauerland in Germany’s wealthy west, a region that defines his politics and persona. During his campaign, he ran on the slogan “More Sauerland for Germany,” evoking the region’s image as a heartland of the country.

Supporters call him an agile politician with the potential to deliver on the big issues worrying the German public: growth, defense, immigration.

“I think he’s extremely well prepared and very deep and thoughtful,” said John P. Schmitz, a deputy White House counsel under George H.W. Bush. Mr. Schmitz helped hire Mr. Merz to work in the German offices of the Chicago law firm Mayer Brown and jumped out of the plane in Corsica with Mr. Merz around 2005.

But others say Mr. Merz struggles to plan more than one step ahead, leading him to break promises — and leaving him vulnerable to surprise setbacks like the vote Tuesday.

His about-faces on spending and migration have alienated many of his base’s conservative voters. And Mr. Merz and his party have sagged in the polls since the election, allowing the AfD to draw even with them in some surveys. Even before his parliamentary stumble on Tuesday, he had one of the lowest approval ratings of any German leader in the modern era.

“There’s this old saying: ‘Whatever you do, act wisely and consider the end,’” said Ruprecht Polenz, a former secretary general of Mr. Merz’s party. “This thinking,” he added, “I feel is not his main strength.”

Italian Open: Jannik Sinner says not missing any Grand Slams during three-month doping ban was ‘good news’

0

Sinner had previously been cleared of any wrongdoing by an independent panel after testing positive for the banned substance clostebol in March 2024.

Wada lodged an appeal against that decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, saying at the time it was seeking a “period of ineligibility of between one and two years.”

Wada ultimately entered into negotiations with Sinner’s legal team having come to the conclusion a ban of that length would constitute an “unduly harsh sanction.”

Some players have been critical of the length and timing of Sinner’s ban.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka posted he does not “believe in a clean sport any more” while 2022 Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios said fairness in tennis “does not exist”.

Sinner’s news conference took place just after he had arrived on site for the first time, allowing for little interaction with other players.

His answers instead focused on the Italian Open, which he considers a “very low expectation tournament”.

He also would not be drawn on if he was surprised neither Alexander Zverev or Carlos Alcaraz had overtaken him at the top of the world rankings in his absence.

“I am happy in the position I am but I would be happy even if I’m three or four in the world,” Sinner said.

“I’m just happy to be back here – I’m happy to play again in front of the fans, and I have a goal in front of my eyes.”

Merz appointed German chancellor hours after unprecedented parliamentary defeat

0

CNN
 —

Germany’s Friedrich Merz has formally become chancellor at the second attempt, hours after an unprecedented defeat signaled deep discontent within his coalition.

In a hastily organized session on Tuesday afternoon, 325 lawmakers voted to approve his appointment – more than the 316 he required.

Merz, who won an election in February and unveiled a ruling coalition last month, had fallen six votes short earlier in the day, a stunning setback that marked another twist in a tortuous period of uncertainty for the country.

He was finally approved as chancellor by Germany’s president and sworn in at the Bundestag on Tuesday afternoon. But his tenure will start on an unstable footing: The day’s votes not only revealed reluctance inside his coalition, but gave the insurgent far-right AfD party a new opportunity to ruffle the political establishment.

Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party won an election in February, but failed to pick up enough seats to govern outright – an outcome that is commonplace in Germany’s diverse political environment.

He last month announced he would form a coalition with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), a rare fusing of Germany’s two establishment groups that ensured the AfD – which came second in the February poll – would remain locked out of power. It extended the so-called “firewall,” a blockade against far-right groups that German politicians have kept in place since after World War II, but which has become increasingly tenuous.

The coalition has 328 seats in total, and the vote to approve a chancellor is usually a formality; never before in modern German history had a chancellor-in-waiting failed to win. But on Tuesday, on what was set to be a day of celebration, Merz’s future was briefly plunged into uncertainty.

His defeat, which had been entirely unexpected, came after weeks of attacks against his bloc from the AfD and from the increasingly intrusive Trump administration. And it exposed the early cracks within a marriage of convenience between the CDU and the SPD.

Because the vote was held by secret ballot, it was not immediately clear – and might never be known – who had defected from Merz’s camp.

It is a rocky start for a leader who has promised to pursue an aggressive agenda.

Merz won a two-thirds parliamentary majority in March to change Germany’s constitutional “debt brake,” a mechanism to limit government borrowing. He intends to give renewed impetus to a 2022 German security policy change dubbed “Zeitenwende” – “turning point” in English – that was initiated by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz and would see Berlin turbocharge its defense spending in an effort to modernize an ageing military.

That push was given greater urgency after US President Donald Trump’s administration threatened to end American support for Ukraine and withdraw security guarantees for Europe. Moments after he won Tuesday’s second vote, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sought to keep the effort at the top of his agenda.

“We sincerely hope that Germany will grow even stronger and that we’ll see more German leadership in European and transatlantic affairs,” Zelensky posted on X. “This is especially important with the future of Europe at stake — and it will depend on our unity.”

US State Department congratulated Merz, saying it would “continue to work with Germany and its next government to ensure the security of the United States and Europe.”

Merz will have to deal with disruption from the far-right AfD, which came second in February’s election and is now topping some opinion polls. The group quickly pounced on the parliamentary uncertainty on Tuesday morning, calling for fresh elections. “We are ready for government responsibility. And we call for common sense to prevail,” its leader Alice Weidel said. “Merz should resign immediately.”

It is a complicated in-tray for the new leader, who was was born in 1955 into a conservative, Catholic family in in central Germany, and who joined the CDU’s youth wing while still in school. He entered politics full-time in 1989, when he was elected to the European Parliament at the age of 33.

After serving one term as an MEP, Merz, a married father-of-three, was elected to the Bundestag – Germany’s parliament – and established himself as a leader in financial policy. In 2003, he famously argued that German tax rules should be simple enough to calculate on the back of a beer coaster.

A feud with former leader Angela Merkel led him to leave politics, and Merz worked for years as a lawyer in the private sector, before returning to take control of the party in 2022.

Andrew Garfield Was Filmed With Monica Barbaro After the 2025 Met Gala

0

Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro were spotted together in New York City this weekend, but the couple chose not to make their Met Gala debut last night. Only Barbaro stepped out at this evening’s Met Gala, marking her first time at the prestigious fashion event. However, Garfield was with Barbaro later in the evening.

Barbaro channeled the night’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme in a Dior dress on the red carpet.

While Garfield and Barbaro have been at events together, they have never posed on a red carpet side by side. The two were first romantically linked in February. Weeks later, they were photographed leaving the Vanity Fair Oscar Party together. They have since been seen in Japan and New York.

Garfield has been vocal about his desire to keep his love life private. In October, he told Esquire, “I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever.”

Barbaro, meanwhile, spoke to Variety in February about why she deleted social media off her phone. It has nothing to do with her personal life as much as it has to do with her A Complete Unknown co-star, Timothée Chalamet: “I had to delete social media because there’d be a photo of Timmy and then this onslaught of people saying, ‘He’s going to win an Oscar for this!’” Barbaro recalled. “And I had to tune it all out because we hadn’t even shot the film yet. My job was to do the work at the utmost level, so I deserved to have my name next to Timmy’s and Elle [Fanning] and Edward [Norton].”

She continued, “It was an interesting time because Timmy and the film had so much buzz, there were people sneaking on to set and grabbing videos or crowds gathering on the street and you’d just see smartphones up. And all that was irrelevant to the time we were portraying; it wasn’t a part of their head space. What’s funny is I’ve deleted it again because I was overwhelmed by the lovely, positive feedback. I’ll be back, but I need to respond to the people who have sent me lovely emails and texts first.” Both Barbaro and Chalamet were nominated for Oscars this year.

Jannik Sinner sets low expectations as he returns from doping ban at Italian Open | Jannik Sinner

0

Jannik Sinner said it feels strange to be back on the tennis circuit after his three-month anti-doping ban but he is happy and setting his expectations low as he returns on home soil at the Italian Open, which begin on Wednesday.

“It’s a very low expectation tournament in general,” said Sinner during his pre-event press conference. “Results-wise, I don’t know. For me, what’s missing is the complete feedback of where my level is. That’s going to come slowly with time playing. After the first-round match I’m going to have a good picture of myself, where I am at.

“Talking about the other stuff, with players, I just arrived 45 minutes ago. I haven’t seen so many. I was down talking with some players. It’s all fine at the moment [but] I haven’t seen most of them. So it’s a very strange feeling again, to be around with so many people and attention. But it’s nice to be back. Me and my team are very happy.”

Sinner has not competed since he won the Australian Open, his third grand slam title, in January. His three-month ban was negotiated through a case resolution agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) after he was initially cleared of wrongdoing by an independent tribunal after testing positive for the banned substance clostebol last April.

According to Wada’s rules, banned players are not allowed to train in any officially sanctioned tournament venue or alongside any other professional athlete until one month before they return from their ban. After taking some time off at the beginning of his ban, for Sinner this meant that he was limited in what he was capable of doing. “For me, last year was very difficult,” said Sinner. “I had a lot of personal pressure, holding everything [in] and couldn’t talk with many people about what happened. I was in a tough situation, and in the beginning of the Australian Open, I struggled a lot. So it was nice also to take a small break. Three months is a little bit [too much], it is what it is.

“But a small break was good, but I could feel that I’m not playing for quite a long time.

“The body still has to adjust at times. The blisters and hands, they come again because you know you’re not used to it any more. I’m just very happy and very curious to see where I am at. And now we’ll see.”

In addition to being banned from his own sport, the anti-doping rules also bar suspended athletes from entering sanctioned sporting arenas. According to Sinner, who is an ambassador for Formula One and an avid sports fan, the hardest aspect of the ban was actually not being able to attend any other professional sporting events.

“To be honest, for me, the toughest part was that, in the beginning, I couldn’t watch any other sport, really, in real life,” he said. “I don’t know how many [people] know this, but, for example, watching a simple football match in a stadium, I couldn’t go there to watch it. I wanted to support my friends in cycling or motor sport, I couldn’t go there. That, for me, was the toughest part. But all things considered, I tried to make the best out of it, being ready mentally from the point when I started again to play tennis and that’s it. No, it’s all fine. And I was very glad to also spend some time with my family.”

Sinner has become one of the most prominent and successful Italian athletes of his era, meaning his return to competition in his home country has naturally generated significant news and attention. His press conference was completely filled with journalists and a number of attendees applauded when the tennis player entered the room. Sinner’s romantic relationships have also been the subject of discussion in recent weeks, which prompted him to humorously address those rumours in his opening statement.

“There’s a whole a lot of attention, also kind of off the court. And I was also very surprised to see some pictures, which are nothing serious. So yeah, I’m not in a relationship. So whoever is asking, it’s all good,” he said, smiling.

A few hours later, Sinner entered Campo Centrale to thunderous applause for his first practice session at an official tournament in three months. His practice points with Jiri Lehecka, the 23-year-old Czech, was soundtracked by a constant stream of cheers from his home crowd. Sinner remains the ATP No 1 and as with all seeded players at the Italian Open, he has received a first-round bye. He will mark his return to professional tennis in round two against either Mariano Navone or Federico Cina.
